Six years ago, during her first year attending Nunavut Sivuniksavut, Karen took up throat singing, an Inuit woman’s traditional form of song.
Throat singing imitates sounds that are found in the environment, such as wind and birds. There are no courses available in throat singing so Karen began practicing with friends which progressed from there.
Karen Flaherty has travelled to such places as Iceland, Greenland, Switzerland and various parts of Canada performing throat singing. Karen also performs at many local gatherings, trade shows and community events across the territory and has truly developed into a well known and respected performer.
